In singer Alastair's own words, their sound is "a lovely blend of Big Star twisted power-pop and country achin', with flashes of the Beatles at their most joyful and upbeat." Just the thing to bring a little sunshine into these dark winter nights. You can find "God save the Clientele" at your local record emporium or buy it from us now.
The main attraction here, however, is Darren’s lyrics as he continues to plough an idiosyncratic furrow through the modern British urban landscape. Subject matter includes declining standards of art education in secondary schools (Art and Design), a love affair from the perspective of a Lacoste logo (Crocodile) and cheap high street engagement rings (Elizabeth Duke). Darren is disappointed and in love with the world and the people he sings about. This album isn’t big, brash, or loud mouthed, rather it is simple, articulate, funny, robust and made with love.
And the long awaited new album 'Hello Love' is also recommended - a superlative, warm-hearted collection of twisted love songs. It’s also their heaviest, most diverse, and – dare we say it – least countrified album to date.
